Message You may have a point that Nissan was a little optimistic with a few of their cars' HP ratings, but I think the main factor is that Toyota under rates their cars.

Toyota has a habit of being very modest. They over-engineer things and downplay what they just did.

The Supra's factory output, for instance, is underrated by quite a bit. While the claimed HP of the Supra is only 20hp more than the Z, people have dyno'd almost 60 rwhp more than the Z. The Supra in actuality has around 360 hp, and its trap speeds prove it. If you take its weight into account and look at the traps it delivers, you'll see that there's no way it has 320 bhp.

And besides talking about Nissan and Toyota, if you take a wide sample of many different cars from different makes and compare the HP at the wheels to the claimed HP at the crank, they all seem to be extemely close in their drivetrain loss. Only a select few vehicles are underrated to downplay the power they really have, such as Toyota's high end cars, LS1 Fbods, Vipers, 2003 Mustang Cobras, and only a couple of others.
